This is no ordinary story, rather a tale of extraordinary friendship. They say a good friend is hard to find, but this friendship is one of a kind.
The tale begins in high school at Branksome Hall where Kim Chisholm meets Chloe (Stewart) McMahon and they instantly become the best of friends. The girls spent their days skipping class to play cards, gossiping about boys and dreaming about their future. Growing from teens to adults together, Kim and Chloe made memories to last a lifetime.
Now, fifteen years later Kim and Chloe are still making memories through their mission to make a difference in other’s lives. Their mission began on August 15th, 2005, when Chloe gave birth to her second son, Julian, who was diagnosed with Down Syndrome and a fatal heart condition.
There are no true words to explain the pain a mother feels when she must leave the hospital without her child. There are also no words to explain the true strength Kim provided to Chloe in her time of need.
Every day of his short life Chloe and her family went back and forth from their home in the Beaches to visit Julian, hoping for his recovery at The Hospital for Sick Children. Through all the headaches and heartaches Kim was one of Chloe’s greatest sources of strength. Kim offered Chloe the support and love of a true friend. “Kim was at my door with food, a blanket with Julian’s name on it, and books on Down Syndrome the second she heard about Julian, ” Chloe remembers. “Kim has so much love in her she doesn’t know what to do with it, and in my time of need she comforted me not only as a mother to a mother, but also as a friend to a friend.”
Julian’s journey ended early December 2005. Chloe and her family found comfort in the thought that “we are all put on this earth to be loved. When we have received all the love we need your heart and soul are free to move on, and any new love that was meant for you can be passed on to someone else who needs it.”
The ones who are in need of love now are the hundreds of children and families who are experiencing the same sorrow and pain of Chloe and her family. There are still many children at SickKids who can be helped.
To remember Julian in a special way, Kim has decided to reach out into the community and make a difference through organizing a fundraiser for SickKids Foundation. Kim feels that “organizing an event like this is a ton of work but gives back in so many ways. It feels great to know that our efforts are helping sick kids get healthy again. When you do something in response to a tragedy, it helps to give that tragedy a purpose. Chloe and her family never thought anything like this would ever happen but it has and by hosting a fundraising event for SickKids Foundation we are honoring Julian and the love he brought to his parents, family and friends.”
Kim has graciously been working her heart out to make this fundraiser a success. Putting in over thirty hours of work a week, she would love nothing else then to help other children and carry on the spirit of Julian.
On April 1st 2006, all members of the community are invited to honor Julian’s life and help save others. “Sing Aong with Sandra Beech, Under the Dancing Stars” is a family concert that children of all ages will love. The concert features Juno award winner, children’s entertainer Sandra Beech and includes entertainment for the whole family. The concert will be held at the Winter Garden Theatre, 189 Yonge Street, Toronto. Tickets are only 25 dollars and can be purchased through Ticket Master box offices at 416.870.8000, or online at www.ticketmaster.ca. All proceeds from this event will go directly to SickKids Foundation. Please love generously and give children in need the chance to grow up and experience extraordinary friendships like Kim and Chloe’s.
They say on the road of life it is not where you go that matters, but who you are with. No matter where the road takes Kim and Chloe, they know that they have each other, and a friendship that is anything but ordinary.
