My winter dog poo nightmare

So, I hate to bring up such a nasty topic... But I have this awful worry that every spring, months of backyard dog "gifts" will sink down with the melting snow and form pooey puddles that run off down into the lake. Beach dog owners! Do you stoop and scoop in the winter?

Don't blame all pet owners

Well some do....I know I do. Seems funny how a few bad apples paint all of us with the same brush. Being a responisble pet owner is a full time deal, not seasonal as it sometimes seems.

I agree, a lot of responsible pet owners getting a bad rap for the few that aren't.

Yes I agree with the responses from others saying that the majority of dog owners get a bad rap because of the few who do not pick up after their dogs. But never fear, there are dog owners who tell them off when they have been spotted and I actually pick up frozen poop on my walks when I notice it (which isn't that much)... and I am sure that I am not the only one!

How would you like it if you were dragged around on a leash and collar and forced to relieve yourself in public in minus 20 temperatures? And how come the cat gets a box in the house?

I consider myself a very resonsible owner who always scoops. Often times when I stop to scope I not only pick up my dogs but found others and scoped as well. I also must bring up the point that there are racoons in the neighbourhood that are the size of a small dog, where do we think they go? A special litter box? Also the cats that run free through the neighbourhood do we think they save it until they get home? I'm sorry but I do know there are bad apples and myself have said something and even offered a bag to a non-scooper but dogs are not the only animals running around in the neighbourhood.

You know what I notice...Sometimes the unleasted dog is running around with their owner and finds a place to do his thing as the owner walks by and doesn't see him cause the dog is behind his back while doing it and then just keeps walking leaving the poop behind

Yes, this happens a lot. And then we get it on our shoes (just finished scraping some off, yech). Personally I grew up on a farm and I cringe when I see dogs cooped up indoors a lot of their lives, only occasionally allowed to be outdoors, which is their natural habitat. I challenge dog owners to think about this and their need for companionship. Perhaps it would be better served in other ways, like volunteering to help humans who may need assistance? I love dogs, I just don't think it's a great life for them in a city.

Spring time is the best, as the receding snow reveals the steaming land mines all along the beach :) But this is the same across the country. How else would one know it's spring?
