If recent interplanetary exploration hasn’t left you pondering the quintessential elements of life on this planet, then "Configurations" at the John B. Aird Gallery until January 7th, will. Whether plugged into a hi-tech energy source or spiraling effortlessly through sumptuous, painterly landscapes, David Owen Campbell’s "structures" are echoes of an internal voice and a disconcerting, otherworldly presence at one and the same time. At a point in time when humans have been cowed by tsunamis and volcanic eruptions, Campbell’s figures, “An allegory of the human condition”, appear ready to take on all comers. As a body of work, these splendidly conceived “Metaphors of life”, exude an energy and power which is both primordial and futuristic, creating a conundrum of sorts for the viewer. Is this an internal dialogue to which we have become willing voyeurs or is something far more intimate afoot?
The clue is in the scale. Four by eight foot canvases reveling in the mystery of human existence allow easy access, portals if you will, for anyone desiring entry to this strange but wonderful world, where decidedly human forms pose, strut, dance and otherwise seek to draw the attention of an audience. The invitation to participate is clear. With a deft brush stroke by an artist who has mastered his craft, David Own Campbell’s subjects are in control and the viewer is hard pressed to deny the invitation. A perfect way to celebrate the New Year - At the John B. Aird Gallery until January 7, 2024 For further information contact the gallery at: 416-928-6772 Or to arrange an interview with the artist: 416-225-3148
