With the right beginning, the love of music can be fostered. Some of our students might become professional musicians or performers, but it is the love and knowledge of music that is most important. My first group of eight students were six years old in 1972. Then parents asked for classes for their five-year-olds, four-year-olds and even three-year-olds. Our baby and parent classes were the first of their kind in Metro in January, 1983 - and only the second of its kind in Canada. This came about as a result of watching the younger siblings who came with mom to watch their brothers and sisters in class. The smallest of them were rocking back and forth and babbling when the other kids were singing. It was obvious to me that - small as they were - they were enjoying the experience! These classes started back in 1972 to give children a basic appreciation and love of music that would stay with them - at some level - all their lives. We have had a great deal of success over the years, and occasionally run into an ex pupil to learn that they have cut demo records, or still enjoy playing piano just for the fun of it. Some sing in choirs. Others have taught themselves different instruments and one even sings and composes her own material. We offer classes at the Bellefair United Church for children three months to four years, Monday and Friday mornings. Our next session begins the week of February 2nd 2004! We look forward to continuing the tradition of awakening the love of music in all children. Moyra Walker
