History

Beach Boathouse, 1932
1932-The Celebration

It was Victoria Day, 1932 and Toronto residents were ready to celebrate the official opening of a new city landmark.

After years of council debates and community petitions, the Beaches Waterfront Park and Athletic Field and Boardwalk was officially opened.

The opening attracted more than 60,000 people-one of the biggest gatherings of its time.

Cars, streetcars and pedestrians crowded onto Woodbine Ave. There were clowns, floats, land and water races, bagpipe bands, a ladies softball game and a gigantic bonfire to complete the day.

The gem of the new waterfront playground was The Boathouse on the Boardwalk
